As you cross the Gobi, I'd recommend sticking to the railway all the way. Do not be tempted to follow the new highway developments as it does not pass through the rare towns. From what we researched and learned from other cyclists, it was possible to cross the Mongolian part of the border but NOT, under any circumstances, the Chinesse side of the no man's land. Those who have tried have apparently been stopped and subsequently black-listed on the Chinesse immigration computer system (and have been refused visas).
